NCTO Manager, HRB – National Clinical Trials Office, College of Medicine & Health, UCC
Specific Purpose, Whole Time Post (Anticipated duration of 15 months)
University College Cork invites applications for an experienced Manager who will drive the implementation of its agreed programme of work and business plan in line with the aims and objectives of the National Clinical Trials Coordination Programme 2021, working in close collaboration with the award PI.
With the support of the Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland, UCC and the seven University-based Clinical Research Facilities/Centres (CRFs/Cs) in the Republic of Ireland the Health Research Board – National Clinical Trials Office (HRB NCTO), will deliver on the aims of the National Clinical Trials Coordination Programme 2021 over the remaining 15 month term of its funding award.
The Manager of HRB NCTO will drive the implementation of its agreed programme of work and business plan in line with the aims and objectives of the National Clinical Trials Coordination Programme 2021, working in close collaboration with the award PI.
The Manager of HRB NCTO will report to the PI of the HRB NCTO award and to the HRB NCTO. They will lead the HRB NCTO team and will work closely with Study Feasibility and Start up Coordinator staff located across the CRFs/Cs network. They will comply with HR policies of UCC as their employer.

CRC Operations Manager Grade VII – Children’s Health Ireland (CHI)
Description
Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) is leading on the clinical and operational transformation of acute paediatric healthcare and comprises of the three children’s hospitals at CHI at Crumlin, Dublin 12, CHI at Temple Street, Dublin 1 and CHI at Tallaght, Dublin 24 and the Paediatric Outpatients and Urgent Care Centre, CHI at Connolly Hospital, Dublin 15. The new Paediatric and Emergency Care Unit in Tallaght opened in November 2021. The three children’s hospitals and CHI’s Programme Office, CHI Herberton is located in Rialto, Dublin 8 adjacent to the new children’s hospital which is on the campus shared with St. James’s Hospital transitioned from separate, independently governed entities into one new single organisation effective from 1st January 2019 to govern and operate paediatric services in Dublin.
Clinical research is essential to provide an evidence base for improved medicines and treatment of sick children. It is well accepted internationally that hospitals active in research and innovation are associated with better outcomes for patients and better recruitment and retention of staff. As Ireland’s largest paediatric hospital and the leading centre in for the conduct of clinical trials and studies in children and young adults, CHI has placed excellence in research and innovation as one of its key strategic objectives.
As part of ongoing development at CHI towards the opening of the new Children’s Hospital, a rationalisation and integration of the existing clinical research infrastructure across all sites is being undertaken. Under the leadership of the Director of Research & Innovation, a new Research & Innovation department including a Clinical Research Centre (CRC) has been set-up within CHI to bring all aspects of the clinical research infrastructure together under a single governance and management structure. The Clinical Research Centre is the forerunner of the new paediatric Clinical Research Facility (CRF) that will be embedded in the new Children’s Hospital. The CRC is made up of a team of research staff working across CHI sites to support clinical teams in the conduct of clinical trials and studies.
This developing research infrastructure will sit within the academic framework of the Paediatric Academic Health Science Centre (PAHSC), a new partnership bringing together CHI and its Dublin based academic partners with the triple mission of integrated paediatric clinical care, research and education throughout CHI and the universities.
As part of the Research Management Team, the post holder will be responsible for managing the day-to-day clinical research operations and supporting management of the project portfolio of the Clinical Research Centre, working closely with Research Project Managers. They will be responsible for line management of Research Nurses, Coordinators and Assistants and provide leadership, mentoring and training for these functions.
This role will evolve in line with the set-up of CHI Research & Innovation and the development and integration of CHI clinical research infrastructure across sites and will have a key strategic leadership role in the planning, establishment and ongoing development of the Clinical Research Facility at the New Children’s Hospital.
Essential Criteria:
· A BSc. in a Clinical or Life Science related subject or equivalent third level education.
· Previous experience working in a Clinical Research Facility/Centre, or equivalent relevant experience working in a clinical environment.
· At least 5 years of relevant experience in clinical trials in the biomedical or pharmaceutical industry or a related healthcare environment.
· Direct experience of leading and managing a team.
· Project Management experience and a proven track record in delivering in a similar project or programme role, for a minimum of 1 year.
· Understanding of current Irish medical, academic and health services research environment and knowledge of the regulatory and legislative requirements relating to the conduct of clinical research.
· Prior experience of study costing and budget development
Desirable Criteria:
· Background in a clinical role
· Experience of early phase trials.
· Relevant experience in paediatric research.
