  • Research Assistant, Dementia Trials Ireland

    Post Summary

    The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary research team, based at St James’ Hospital in Dublin, working on studies related to interventions (drug and non-drug interventions) for Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, as part of the Clinical Trials’ Network, ‘Dementia Trials Ireland’ (DTI). DTI studies use different methods including imaging, biomarkers, and neuropsychological methods to assess healthy volunteers, carers, and people with lived experience of dementia. The post holder will gain experience with applied dementia research in the form of supporting aspects of observational research and clinical trials’ methodology for people with or at risk of dementia.

    The current study portfolio is a combination of investigator-led and industry-sponsored studies.

    The post, primarily based in St. James’s Hospital, will support the different trials and studies within the DTI portfolio, principally by engaging in neuropsychological testing, outcome rating and data collection/entry in accordance with trial protocol, ethics, and governance requirements. Additional trial duties, quality checks and research-related activities will be overseen, as required, by the DTI Network Manager and/or Trial Coordinator. In execution of role requirements, the successful candidate will interface with the DTI network leads, network management / trial coordination team, the clinical team at St James’ Hospital’s Memory Clinic, as well members of the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at St James’ Hospital, who support DTI trials.

TCIN is a large-scale Trinity Research Institute (TRI) with 45 PIs and 200 researchers. Clinical assessment and patient -focused studies occur at the Memory Clinic, located within the Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing, a state of the art clinical, research and teaching facility for older people located at St. James’s Hospital.

    The primary responsibility for the CRSO Manager is to manage and develop a strategic plan for the CRSO as a separate unit within the DERI Directorate. The post holder will have a key role in supporting the establishment of the CRSO Office and embedding its activities within MMUH.

    The post holder will report directly to the Operations Manager of DERI. She/he will liaise with the CRSO team, the DERI Operations Manager, Principle Investigators, Researchers, the Pharmaceutical industry and other organisations to facilitate the efficient and effective running of research within the MMUH portfolio.

    She/he will add value and contribute to the delivery of the CRSO’s objectives to support investigators and clinical research study teams to conduct clinical research, reduce administrative burdens, enhance compliance, and help remove barriers to enable efficiency, internal/external collaboration, cost recovery, and growth of clinical trials at site, while ensuring that the operational day to day requirements of the CRSO service are met.

    The CRSO Manager will be responsible for the line management of the CRSO Administrator and will provide oversight of CRSO activities to the DERI Operations Manager, the DERI Clinical Director and the MMUH Research Governance Committee.

    The CRSO Manager will act as coordinator for the Microb-AI-ome study at site. The Microb-AI-ome study aims to use federated artificial intelligence for privacy preserving international stratification of colorectal cancer patients.
